About the Author: Jamila Gavin Jamila Gavin was born in Mussoorie, India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. With an Indian father and an English mother, she inherited two rich cultures which have run side by side throughout her life. Jamila completed her schooling in England, where she later worked for the BBC and became a mother of two children. It was then that she began writing children's books? Since her first book The Magic Orange Tree was published in 1979, she has been writing steadily, producing award-winning collections of short stories and several teenage novels for the whole age range from six to sixteen. One of Britain's most acclaimed children's authors, she has been shortlisted for the Smarties Award, the Guardian Children's Fiction Award and the Carnegie Medal. In 2000 Jamila won the prestigious Children's Whitbread Award for her novel, Coram Boy, which has since been adapted into a successful play at London's National Theatre. Films are also being planned for both Coram Boy and The Wheel of Surya.
